You know you're a traveller when...

Living in a hostel room with 10 other people is not regarded as an unfortunate tragedy, but rather, a fun way of making friends and drinking buddies.

Your favourite book is The Beach.

You are bilingual (or at the very least, you can order beer in about 10 different languages).

When someone tells you that they don't own a passport, you stare at them like they have just informed you that they're actually the reincarnation of Hitler.

Back home, you are appalled when discovering that flip flops no longer constitute as proper footwear.

When you log on to Facebook, 75% of the status updates on your news feed are in a different language.

You smirk at people who consider themselves "travellers," when all they have to their credit are family trips to Disney World, and Spring Break trips to Cuba.

When abroad, you own about 3 shirts that you wear everyday.

When you hear strangers talk about travelling, you immediately eavesdrop.

You spend more on alcohol than food.

You've dated more 'foreigners' than people from your own country.

You've also made out with people who doesn't speak your language.

Back home, you seem to have a better immune system and higher alcohol tolerance than your friends.

In any given situation where you are with a group of people from at least six different countries, you call it a "L'Auberge Espagnole" moment.

A traveller's playlist

With my trip to Europe coming up, I've been looking for some new music to include in my summer playlist. While travelling, I find that there's always that one song you hear playing at any given club or bar in a certain country, and hearing the same song again back home always brings so many memories.

As most travellers know, the best playlist is never full of the most current songs on the radio, but rather, the songs with the catchiest lyrics to dance and sing (poorly) to after consuming too much alcohol. So which songs made this list?


Here's my top ten:

1. Wonderwall - Oasis
This one's a given. I love how everyone knows the lyrics to this song, even if they only know like, five words of English.

2. It's My Life - Bon Jovi
If you're a free spirit, this song pretty much says it all doesn't it?

3. Thriller - Michael Jackson
There's no bond stronger between a group of people than the re-enactment of the Thriller dance.

4. Sex on Fire - Kings of Leon
You know you love this song.

5. California - Phantom Planet
This song always conjures up beaches and the sun. What a perfect combination (also add to that list: surfers and pina coladas).

6. Down - Jay Sean ft. Lil Wayne
They play this at every backpacker bar I've been to.

7. Champagne Supernova - Oasis
I love Oasis. I think every Oasis song deserves a spot on this list.

8. Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
We may not be in high school anymore, but there's nothing better than young romance. Especially when it's with an underwear model (see music video).

9. 4 Minutes - Madonna ft. Justin Timberlake
The world is full of crazy collaborations, but this one is genius.

10. Oops I Did It Again - Britney Spears
You read my blog. You know that a Britney song will somehow make its way to this list.

8 Types of Travellers You'll Meet on the Road

Similar to the unfortunate abundance of self-obsessed hipsters readily found in art schools, to the socially awkward and perpetually single accountants at any given corporate firm, you are likely to meet travellers who also fall into very distinct categories when backpacking. While most travellers tend to be fun individuals, there are also the ones that you try to avoid at all costs. Here is my list of some of the most common types of travellers on the road.

How many have you met?

Mr. Aspiring Underwear Model
This is the guy who happens to be blessed with good genetics but unfortunately flaunts it off whenever possible by walking around the hostel sans shirt. They seem to have a great hatred toward shirts in general as they have a never-ending list of excuses to take it off whenever possible. These might include the hot weather, being too drunk, or that all their clothes are in the laundry. Their shirtlessness is obviously to make other male travelers feel self-conscious of the state of their own abs, and for them to sleep with as many girls as possible. Verdict: avoid whenever possible; Very bad specimen.

The Stoner/Hippie/Bob Marley Fan
Usually Canadian, Swiss, or South African, these guys are often seen wearing a bandana, or sport dreadlocks. Although they may smell a bit funky, they are really laid-back and enjoy spending all their nights getting high on the patio of the hostel, listening to Bob Marley, or playing music on their guitar. They have a deep disdain for anything corporate and would like to think of their travels as a journey for spiritual or self enlightenment.
